The REAL Series come ready to use straight out of the box - there is no set up outside of scanning the QR code on the outside of the wallet which is the public address.  There is nothing to be maintained or electronically updated with the wallet. There is an app that can be used in conjunction with the physical wallet but is not necessary for sending or receiving as the user holds the key and can use any wallet service that works with BIP38. There is no "Account" to create, no "Registration" to perform and no monthly fees.  The app can be used to easily view and manage the user's assets but is 100% optional.

The key component in SeedSigner is a specific version of the Raspberry Pi Zero single board computer (version 1.3) that does not include WiFi or Bluetooth functionality; the absence of these modules ensures that your private keys never leave the device. Communication with wallet software is accomplished using a two-way QR code exchange process. Information about a proposed transaction is displayed by the wallet software on your computer’s screen, encoded in multiple QR codes, and you scan in the transaction information using SeedSigner’s built-in camera. Information about the proposed transaction is then displayed on the SeedSigner screen. Using cryptographic signatures, SeedSigner then proves that it has the correct private keys to authorize the transaction, and QR codes demonstrating that proof are displayed on SeedSigner’s screen. You then use your computers web-camera to input the QR codes generated by SeedSigner to authorize the transaction. SeedSigner is built to be compatible with Specter-Desktop, Sparrow Wallet and Blue Wallet Multisig Vaults."

The Satochip hardware wallet has full BIP32 and BIP39 support and also supports the import of regular (non-BIP keys) such as vanity keys. Even more, private keys cannot be exported outside of the secure chip. Up to 16 regular keys can be imported on the chip. As a result, the private keys can be used to sign transactions and crypto messages, if sufficient credentials are provided.
